As you go through life, you are bound to see German Shepherds working in a number of careers. Some are guard dogs, some are therapy dogs, and some work in law enforcement. German Shepherds are immeasurably popular in the working field because their extreme intelligence makes them highly trainable, and their strength and agility makes them capable of performing most tasks. In Germany, standards for German Shepherd breeding and performance are much stricter. A training program called “Schutzhund” was created in the 20th century as a means by which to train and regulate the performance of the breed.

The Schutzhund training and judging process is threefold. There are three separate levels a German Shepherd must complete to become certified in Schutzhund. In the first level, known cleverly as Schutzhund One, the dog in question has to determine eligibility by undergoing a temperament test called a “B Test”. Most handlers will go through basic obedience and socialization training with their German Shepherd prior to attempting the B Test, as it gauges the dog’s ability to obey their owner and interact with distractions such as people or other animals. If a particular dog ever shows signs of fear or fear-based aggression, he or she will be disqualified from the Schutzhund process immediately. Thus, it is important for those pursuing Schutzhund certification to provide proper etiquette training for the dogs from puppyhood, lest the be disqualified and forbidden to breed, compete, or be registered in Germany.

Besides the temperament test, each level of Schutzhund focus on three major areas: obedience, tracking ability, and willingness to act as a protector. As the levels progress from one to three, the German Shepherd must complete more difficult versions of each task and will be judged with more scrutiny.

Obedience training and testing is performed in an open field. Dogs are usually worked in teams of two, though each dog will take turns performing. Obedience testing in Schutzhund is rather similar to obedience testing in the American Kennel Club, with more stringent regulations. The dogs are judged on their ability to perform a battery of obedience commands, specifically heeling and staying commands, and are tested for patient and whether or not they are gunshy.

Tracking testing in Schutzhund is also similar to tracking competitions and trials found in the Unite States, only more specific. Schutzhund candidates will follow a lengthy track locating specifically and strategically placed items along the track. Once the item has been found, the dog is taught to lay on his stomach and hold the item between his forepaws, thus showing or telling his handler than the object in question has been recovered. Judging in Schutzhund tracking is based on how quickly and efficiently the German

Shepherd is capable of tracking, locating, and reporting the various items on the track.

The third and final phase of Schutzhund training and testing is based around protection. The handler will have an assistant, typically in a padded safety suit, create a mock attack on the handler. The German Shepherd is evaluated based on his willingness to protect his handler/owner, and his response to commands such as attack and release, and the efficiency and obedience with which these commands are performed.

Schutzhund training and testing, while containing many similar elements to American dog trials, training, and competition, is a much more stringent and specific method of canine evaluation. In Germany. Schutzhund testing is so respected that no dog can be bred unless it is certified in Schutzhund.

The Cairn Terrier As A Family Dog

These are energetic and resilient little dogs that will certainly give you a run for your money if you let them. Even for terriers, they are very athletic, hyper, and stubborn. Nine times out of ten your Cairn Terrier will tire you out long before he or she is ready to call it a day.

While the Cairn Terrier was initially bred as a hunting companion for those interested in small game, or was used as a ratter, the breed’s increasing popularity has led to an entirely new calling! Like children, a well behaved and a well trained dog is a pleasure to be around. And also like children, a misbehaved, untrained dog can be a real pain in the neck. That’s why it is very important to start training while your pet is still a puppy. With the correct dog training supplies, training can be easy and fun for you and your lovable pooch.

If you want to train your dog for a specific job, for example herding or hunting, you will need the correct equipment. For a dog that is going to be used as a sniffer dog by the police, or one that will accompany a police officer when he’s on duty, a special harness is used. This type of dog will need agility training as well as behavioral training.

The equipment needed for this type of training will include a choke chain, an electric ‘bark’, and a special collar. If the animal is aggressive, you may also need to have a muzzle until he learns to respect you and obey your commands.

You too will need some form of protection while training your pet. A store that specializes in dog training supplies will be able to provide you with the necessary padding and gloves. It is important that the owner use the correct equipment during all training sessions.

Most of us however just want our pets to be well behaved and to learn how to obey basic commands. You can teach him yourself or you can join dog training classes where a qualified instructor will help. Either way you will need to have some specific items such as a leash, collar, toys and treats.

All training supplies have been tested and approved to ensure safety for the owner and pet alike. You can find many of these suppliers online. Do a thorough search before buying because you can pick up some real bargains. Happy training!

After the operation, your dog will have a whispery bark and this will make both dog and the owner happy. Sorry to say, barking still comes back after a few months. Knowing that debarking surgery is awful and unreliable, veterinarians rarely suggest this remedy to solve barking problems.

These remedies are provided for you to use in order to solve barking problems. Follow these simple remedies and you’ll be having a peaceful household.

Man’s best friend, yes they are. Commonly found at homes, dogs can be relied upon and trusted by their owners from simple chores to rescuing lives. Well brought-up dogs are endowed with the appropriate management that they need. It is substantial that there is a good relationship between the dog and owner. Otherwise, the one that is well thought-out to be man’s best friend would happen to be one’s most horrifying enemy.

Well-adjusted dogs are safe to be with at one’s private residence. In contrast, dogs with outrageous behavior and don’t know how to obey their master’s commands would end up being a nuisance to the public, even threaten those that are in one’s home, in the streets and to other dogs as well. Dogs do not figure out basic obedience on their own; they must be trained.

Obedience plays a big part in the dog and owner relationship. It is of high regard that the dog recognizes the status of his relationship with his owner. Basically, this is part of a responsible dog ownership.

Dog training is the process of teaching a dog to carry out certain actions in response to definite commands which the dog is trained to understand. They may be trained to go after obedience commands,  execute tricks casually or for circus acts, be a guide dog to lead the blind be a rescue dog to find victims of a disaster, be a hunting dog to aid in hunting aid in herding, tracking, coursing and retrieving, follow agility commands, and serve as a guard animal.

It’s true that the hardest part of training is communicating with the dog in a humane way that he understands. Training is most effective if all those who handle the dog engage in the training to ensure consistent commands, methods, and enforcement. Training classes are offered by many kennels, pet stores, and independent trainers.

Having a pet dog is not only about nourishing him with a healthy diet, exercising him and providing for his other basic needs.  A dog needs to be mentally fit, and trained to know his role in the world.

The Airedale Terrier is a large and very lively terrier that is often known as the “king of terriers.” They are excellent companion dogs as well as hunting, agility, obedience and even police and military dogs. They can be very playful and attentive to their owners but can also be serious workers, an excellent combination for a great all-round dog.

The Airedale Terrier is a very lively and energetic terrier that does have the tendency to be the dominant dog as well as the leader in the family if not properly trained and socialized. They are extremely intelligent and will quickly learn both commands and how to get out following commands so firm and consistent training is a must.

The Airedale Terrier is a good family dog and will interact well with children of all ages. Since they are a large terrier they do need to be taught not to be overly possessive of dog toys or food as well as to avoid snapping when teased or irritated. Teaching children to respect this dog and to watch when the dog has simply had enough is very important.

As with all terriers the Airedale Terrier has an independent and rather headstrong streak that can become a problem during training. Typically, this is worse in intact males that have not been obedience trained and have had little socialization as a puppy.

It is important to purchase an Airedale Terrier from a breeder that starts early socialization and can provide information on the tendencies of the breed. While an excellent obedience dog when trained, they are not always a good choice for a first time dog owner that wishes to raise a dog from a puppy. An Airedale Terrier from a rescue that is already trained and has learned the basics may be a better choice.

The Airedale Terrier can learn to get along with other pets although some simply have difficulty living in the same house with other non-canine pets. Since the Airedale Terrier may be somewhat dog aggressive and may have a tendency to chase other dogs, cats or animals it is essential to keep them on a dog leash when outside of the fenced yard.

As a hunting dog, they may tend to get so involved in the hunt they simply do not respond when called to return. Puppies are generally more accepting of cats than mature dogs that have not had cats in the house.

The Airedale Terrier will be a good companion dog to a non-dominant breed but two dominant type breeds will fight. Spaying and neutering and choosing a companion dog of the opposite gender that is also spayed or neutered is the best possible option.

Responsible Pet Parents Use Paw Protectors

Paw protectors for your dog is one the most important elements of outdoor gear a pet owner can provide. Many pet owners are under the impression that the pads on their paws will protect them while running through the field, walking along the street even playing at the dog park. The pads on a dogs paw is tougher than that of bottom of their pet parent’s feet, however they are at risk.

A lot of dog handlers do not know what to do when their dog barks and is a nuisance for their neighborhood. When the reasons of the dog barking are known, it is much easier to correct the bad behavior. A dog handler who wants to keep problems at bay with his neighbors has many possibilities available from positive training tricks to the use of mechanical gadgets.

Why does a dog bark? A dog barks to communicate a message, show excitement or draw attention. The sound can’t be taken as a rich information message similar to human speech because it is not a language. There are distinctions in the tonality of a bark that can be recognized: disturbance barks are rough and low frequency while play barks are of a more tonal and higher frequency. A bark combined to a particular body posture may send a proper message to the dog’s owner about what is going on.

The main types of barks are warning barks and alarm barks. A warning bark is a response to a territorial intrusion and starts as a low growl becoming more loud and ferocious. If the dog feels in danger, it may as well show its teeth. An alarm bark is a reaction to an unusual event and voiced by one or two barks, which are in no way aggressive. The dog may keep on barking until action has been taken by the handler.

The other kind of barks are playful barks, need barks and on command barks. A dog barks for a treat or during a play session with its owner. It barks in order to have the owner satisfy its need such as providing food when it is hungry or letting it going outside to do its business. Some owners also teach their dogs to bark on command, which is part of a dog obedience training course.

When barking is a nuisance, the behavior can be controlled in different ways, with the easiest solution being the first, and the last the most controversial:

- Finding the reason of the barking and if possible eliminating it.
- Correcting the behavior with positive training methods.
- Attending a dog training course.
- Using a bark collar.
- Surgical debarking.

If a dog barks at another family pet such as a parrot, the solution would be to isolate the cage in another location. Positive training is a method to fix the behavior without punishing. Time needs to be spent with the dog in order to stimulate the animal to remain quiet, and give treats or praise when the barking stops. Dog training classes are also a wonderful way to go, but they need commitment and training centers are not always conveniently located close to one’s home.

There are a few types of very effective bark collars, which are more or less well received by dog lovers. Basically the device produces a response to a bark that annoys the dog and makes the animal stop. A citrus spray collar sprays citronella, that dogs do not like, to disrupt the pattern of barking. A vibrating ultrasonic collar produces a tone that humans can’t hear but irritates the dog and progressively discourage barking. An electrical collar generates a gentle irritation or buzz impression after a bark. The last option is the most debatable mechanical gadget of all for evident reasons.

Surgical debarking is a procedure to modify the dog’s voice box so that a bark makes a reduced noise. This is the last option available for a stubborn dog that won’t stop to bark despite all the efforts made by its owner. It is very controversial and also illegal in certain countries.
