Does the “Potty Rock” really work to housebreak a dog to a certain spot/area outside?

Posted: April 10th, 2011 | Author: admin | Filed under: Common Questions | Tags: , , , , , , , | 3 Comments »

We already have a two year old sheltie who is potty trained and we are adding a second sheltie in a couple of weeks and I want to train them both to do their “business” in a certain part of the yard only. Does anyone have any experience with the Potty Rock or any of the potty training sprays that are out there?
Thanks in advance.

I used a “Pee Post” from Petsmart. And yes, it worked

Left to their own devices, dogs will mark as much as their territory as they can. While the sprays/scents may encourage a dog to “overmark” a particular spot, they will not fully urinate, and will hold some back to mark additional areas around the yard.

It’s important from a young age to keep dogs leashed while taking them out to do their business. Keep them in a small area until they do their business, and praise/treat them. If they do their business elsewhere outside, scold them just as you would if they defecated indoors, and take them to the “potty spot.”

It *is* completely possible to teach a dog that he is only allowed to go to the bathroom in a certain area, as long as there’s something about that area that he can remember. (ie: The potty rock, a special type of bush/grass/dirt/etc.) There is no gimmick that will do this work for you. It’s on you to do the work with him on a daily basis to keep him doing the right thing.
