DS: Breeders and Puppy potty training?

Do you breed show lines or working lines? I’m asking because I’m interested in the Akita Inu. I already know how much money it costs – I preach it to people here all the time. I do plan on going to tons of AKC shows, and speaking with other educated, reputable Akita breeders and learning under one. I think I’ll be breeding working line Akita Inu, or, like a lot of the dogs on there, working and show lines. No, it’s not to get money. I just truly want to see this breed thrive.
Potty Training:
Puppy pads? Really? What’s the point in a puppy pad, when you’re training the puppy to go OUTSIDE not inside? I’m not trying to be sarcastic or rant at all – I am genuinely interested in the thoughts behind the puppy pad and the dog litter box thing. I’m honestly just curious.
Legit: What breed do you consider the best guard dog? Keep in mind things like intelligence, obedience, and of course the aggressiveness of the breed.

@Jazzy: The breeding question is for about 20-30 years into the future. My dogs are very much in control, thanks. If you’ll notice, most of those questions are from almost a year ago. I get advice from other people, yes. It’s because I have an open mind and like to take suggestions, not because I have any problems. Although, yeah, I’ll admit the smaller dog has caused us problems. We’ve found that it was poor breeding – NOT from me, mind you. Someone else gave him to us, and we found out later that he was from a BYB. I wasn’t even aware of the place. I wasn’t even THERE lol. Otherwise I’d have run the other way.
@Kate: Sweetie, I preach details to people. ONCE AGAIN, this is for at least 25 years in the future, when things with myself are calm, and when I don’t have any dogs with me, nor any other pets. I tell people the FACTS: That breeding is thousands of dollars, and you need registered dogs who have been tested/papered, study under a breeding mentor, etc. Believe me, I’ve spent time researching this crap. I’m not just going to jump up at the next Akita Inu puppy – I’m going to study under a mentor. My main focus is to become a trainer. The breeding thing is only a slight possibility that I want EXPERIENCED breeders to converse with me and help me decide if it’s something I actually want to do or not. I’m interested in it, I’m not currently breeding any dogs. All my dogs are neutered/spayed.
@Jazzy: It’s fine. I understand the misunderstanding. I’m sorry for not being more clear. I re-read my own question, and I realized that I definitely worded it wrong ha.
I love the Japanese breeds, but, yeah, the Akita is my favorite. My dog is roughly 50% Akita (that’s what first got me interested) and I’ve fallen in love with him. I do realize that a purebred will be different, hence why I want to go to shows and talk to breeders before I actually start studying under a mentor.

I think the puppy pads/litter boxes are mostly for small apartment dwellers… who have to go down the elevator to the park a block away to relieve themselves otherwise.
Just a week ago you said you were moving in with your bf soon and you really wanted a pit bull. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArYgHohvaIh4MUTvXqeFtVvsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20110205202313AAHTEhb
Most of your other questions involve problems with your dogs. They’re sick, they’re in a fight, I fed them wrong etc etc
Control what you have first before looking into more. I wouldn’t suggest you should look into breeding until you no longer feel the need to always ask Y!A for help and advice.
EDIT: Alright, I apologize. I was under the impression that you wanted to breed NOW. It’s very good that you’re planning this far ahead.
I’m not a dog breeder, never want to be, so I can’t answer most of your questions. I’ll try anyways. For the puppy pads, I don’t see the point of those either…There are special cases to everything though and I’m sure there’s quite a few situations where I can see them being practical. Most of the cases I see in real life aren’t though.
For the guard dog I wouldn’t pick a single breed. It’s more of an individual thing. A large breed can deter people just by appearance and probably any dog barking would do the same.
When it comes to attack dogs I would lean towards a caucasian shepherd. Large dogs with a high bite force are best in my opinion. They can’t be thrown around and can just overpower any man. Dogo argentino, cane corso, fila brasileiro, Boerboel etc etc If you want Japanese like an akita, a tosa inu would be a good attack dog.
I don’t believe in attack dogs though. Training a dog to bite means you can never fully trust it with others. The chances of needed it to attack are too low to warrant such risk in my opinion. Even if it does happen and your dog attacks, you can honestly get in big trouble for that. I know it doesn’t make much sense because it’s in self defense, but I’ve seen a few cases where the victim sues.
My dad worked for three years with the canine unit at Cypress PD before being promoted. There was a case where the dog, Cyrus, bit off a piece of this guy and the victim successfully sued for excessive force and other things… Just a funfact about the quality of police dogs, they bought Cyrus for close to $13,000 straight from Germany. They got him already trained, all the commands were in German. Good dog Cyrus, he passed away almost ten years ago now. RIP
To be 100% honest I don’t really believe in using dogs as a security system nowadays anyway. There’s locks, alarms, weapons, warning signs, fences, and many other things that could work just as good without risk to the dog.
Can only give you my opinion on Potty trainig Vie as I’m not a breeder, but for the amount of money you pay to adopt a puppy from them I would expect to see proof of the lines etc…
In regards to the potty training I would have to agree with you. Potty training for inside is realy based really on the market of lazy people wanting to take a short cut but in some cases like travel (hotel rooms), disability & lifetstyle (apartments) I would imagine these pads & litter boxes are sometimes the only option.
In regards to guard dog, it would really have to depend on the individual, like junk yard dogs are encourage to bite & bark at anyone unless its owner is present. The theme seem to be powerful breeds such as the rot, doberman, pitbull.
But I feel even a pomeranian could be trained as a guard dog unter the right training & circumstances.
On training pads: I’m not a breeder, but have had several dogs in my life. I have always baby gated the pup in the kitchen until it’s house broken. I put a box on it’s side so it has a roof, like a little house, and there’s a blanket or shaggy rug inside. I put papers just outside the box, by the back door, by the sink, and in any areas of floor where there is a lot of space.
Sometimes, I pick up the pup right on the paper and carry them both outside. The pup gets the idea pretty quickly. I DID totally fail to house break a sheep dog. I tried for ONE YEAR. I had to rehome her, and found someone with a heated barn. The dog I have now is 10 & 1/2 months. I’ve only had ONE job in the house, and a few piddles on the paper. When she was 3 & 1/2 months, she had run of the house, nite and day. Yes, I DID have 3 piddles on an area rug when she was 4-5 months old.
All of my dogs except the Sheep Dog knew what to do within a few days to a week after coming here. I keep 1 to 2 dogs at a time. By 4 months, they all have had run of the house, night and day.
I like Labs or Golden Retrievers for guard dogs. They aren’t as aggressive as Shephards, but very protective of family members. They DO shed a lot, so if you want any of them to be house dogs, you better have a good vacuum.
I think both show lines and working lines have their place because some breeds have been so long established to be only show animals and other breeds have experienced such a deep division in the breeding that only show/work divisions do justice to those supreme individuals in each category.
Example: A Peke is only a ‘show dog’
A Lab/Border Collie/English Setter – etc- can be either working or show.
Puppy Pads- BS Lazy people who won’t walk a dog and don’t realize they’re giving themselves an extra step. Like “Pullups” – my 3 yr old daughter potty-trained fine without them.
Guard dog: Any individual dog that barks. No breed. Studies show that a barking dog in the house is a better deterent than a security system (Source FBI)
sweetie, your 16! looking at your older posts, you REALLY need a new hobby other than looking to breed dogs. you preach to EVERYONE els that they need to fix their dogs, but your looking into BREEDING? your a little hypocrite in the making!
ADD: well then good for you, but dont go around telling people to do something when your looking to add to the unwanted pet population yourself! even if it is ‘later” down the road, and i dont really care if its 25 years later. There will STILL be not enough homes for all the dogs that are being bred.
