Help! Housebreaking my dog!?
Posted: April 6th, 2011 | Author: admin | Filed under: Common Questions | Tags: help, Housebreaking | 9 Comments »I just rescued a puppy from the shelter about three weeks ago. He’s five months old and wasn’t potty trained whatsoever. We’ve been working with him for the past few weeks and he was getting really good at only going to the bathroom outside in his little area. Well… that all changed the day it snowed. The past couple of days there has been at least three inches of snow on the ground and he LOVES IT. Every time we go out (which is about every two hours) he just runs around and jumps and plays and eats the snow. I will stand out there with him for a good ten minutes telling him to go potty and he has absolutely no interest in going to the bathroom at all. A couple minutes after we get back inside he goes on the floor
It’s like he’s just too distracted and forgets he has to go to the bathroom. What should I do?!

take him out for walks more often
Coming in from the cold makes all of us want to pee.
He’s a puppy! Welcome to the world of puppies.:)
You’ll have to stay out longer or walk him.
Are you using a cue word?
When he is peeing say ” Hurry up. Hurry up. ” He’ll catch on to that and everytime you say it he will pee just like sitting ywhen you say ‘sit”.
I LOVE puppies! When I got My Puppy about 5 years ago, everyone would be gone during the day. He would ALWAYS go right by the back door but whenever we got home and opened the back door, he refused to go out. So we trained him to keep going there when we bought puppy pads. He used the puppy pads and it would not leave any residue! Now he goes out side. He used the puppy pads for 2 years and then was trained to go outside! Even in the snow too!
Make it a drag when he first goes outside…keep him on a short leash till he goes. then let him off and show him AFTERWARDS its fun.
My dogs get really distracted too, and what I do is just put them outside and let them roam for awhile. Also, they don’t like me to watch them doing their busyness. If he likes to chase after cars or squirrels, take him on a walk to make him go. Enjoy the snow with him:)
Clear off a section from snow. Restrict him to that area UNTIL he has done his business. Playing in the snow is a reward he has to earn by first performing the required activity. Walk him after he eats to drain off some energy too. You may have to stand there for more than ten minutes until he gets his job done. Also make sure he is ready to do business before taking him to the potty area. Teach him that a specific area is the potty area.
Try crate training.
Put him on a leach when you take him out. Walk with him to the place where you want him to do his business –say his name and command him. “Dog, potty” “Dog, potty” When he has finished.
Say “Good boy”– then take the leach off him and let him run and play for awhile. Do this every time until he gets it down.
When he pees inside take him right outside.
You can also try staying outside until he pees.
You might wanna bundle up !!!
It nice and snow covered here too!!
