How do you make a dog stop barking at night, when he sleeps outside?

I’m afraid the neighbors might start complaining.
He barks for good reasons, like when people are walking around by our gate, but for the people who are inside trying to sleep, it might not be good to hear.
How do I make him learn to bark less often, and only when there’s REAL trouble?
I can’t scold him when it’s late at night and go outside.
If someone walks by and he’s sleeping, he’ll hear it and wake up.
(He’s a very light sleeper.)

you can buy sometehing that goes on dogs, that will make it uncomfortable for them to bark .
Otherwise its just a learning and teaching game, where you have to tell your dog, and scold him / her, when he /she barks at people that are not coming into your yard.

Unless you go to extremes by purchasing a shock collar, which by the way I do not suggest, you are not going to be able to stop him from barking when he hears noises outside. Is it at all possible for him to come in at night? A dog is a better watchdog when it is in the house with you. If you refuse to let him in the house, maybe the garage is a better solution. The cozier and quieter their environment is at night, the better you and your neighbors will sleep.
So, you want your dog to discriminate between barking for the heck of it or barking for your heck of it? Interesting!
Bring him in the house to sleep, he doesn’t want to stay outside.
restricting what a dog can bark at,(not including family) can actually confuse the dog. It is normal for dogs to bark at anything and everything that doesn’t belong to their personal space which includes you and the home. I’m assuming its a short bursts of barks of about 3-5 barks with a slight pause and then another 3-5 barks and so on. This is whats called a defensive bark. It used to show “intruders” that they are there and that this is their space. Honestly, let your dog do it. Unless the you and your neighbors homes are directly attached, don’t worry about it. Besides, why are people walking around your gate at night or late night? Unless it is a long chain of barks, I don’t think your neighbors would say anything because in a way, your dog is helping them know someone is there too. Let him go. Over time, he/she will learn at what he should bark at and not because they will realize that somethings are normal while others aren’t welcome.
I had to have allot of people go by, and when the dog would bark I would scold her, but when they trespassed I would allow her to bark. Luckily my friends and neighbors were up for the task and it only took about two weeks. We would test her every other month to make sure she was doing well, and she stuck with the training.
I personally do NOT like the collars, but, if you do use them, it will train them to not bark at all, and can only be worn for 12 hours at a time, then must come off, so you can use it at night, but, it will deter all barking. And it’s awe full to watch…..
I would recommend letting him sleep indoors, that would be the easiest solution.

Personally I dislike the thought of using e-collars I live in a country that have had veterinary expert evaluate the e collar and as a result it is now forbidden to use, as it was found that it is too painful, and unnessesary – training can be accomplished very well without it.
my dog used to bark all the time too, i scouted at him everytime he does but tht dosent last for long so i juz spray some water(those small ones for flowers) right at his face everytime he does tht lol n now he only barks when someone press the doorbell
a bark or shock collar is not the best thing and here’s why. While it helps with the barking when it is taken off dogs will keep barking. The best thing is to keep him inside if you can.
Get the collar the above person mentioned. It works great and will teach him very quickly not to bark. I used it on my dog after being warned by the police about his barking. By the third night he didn’t make a sound.
