How do you stop dogs barking?

Many people recommend bark collars. Done that with expensive and cheap collars, it doesn’t work. Others recommend lightly taping him on the nose when he’s inside but he tries to bite me. When he’s outside, he doesn’t do recall, he has “selective hearing.” He also barks an awful lot at the cats and chases them.
Anyone got any ideas on stopping his barking that doesn’t include expensive bark collars?
Thanks in advance

Give him both barrels of the 12 bore!
Your dog has a brain the size of a pea. You can not reason with it, you need a shock collar that works, find one.
First off, DO NOT use a shock collar! They are inhumane and painful for the dog. Seriously, anybody heard the words “animal cruelty”? There’s a simple and humane way to make his barking habit better. When he barks, make a loud “Ep!” noise. If you are consistent and make that noise every time he barks, he’ll eventually get the memo and stop. As for the situation with the cats, you’ll have to A.) chase them out of the yard yourself before the dog gets close to them, B.) Hold the dog back and apply the “sit” command until the cat leaves, C.) Call animal control if the cats are strays to have them removed from the area and sent to good homes, or D.) Fence in your yard if it isn’t already.
Do your dog a favor and leave the shock collars out of it; doing it this way will be more of a hassle on you, but it is well worth it in the future when you find the end result to be a well-behaved dog.
Ugh..
Dogs bark. If he barks nonstop he must be threatened by something. There is no way you can teach you dog barking is bad. It’s kind of like a parent punishing their child when they talked, because their voice was annoying or something.
Try to sit next to your dog and look at something intently, like you were interested in it. Your dog might react to you body language and realize he should look, not speak. My friend does this with her dog and it works, try it.
Honestly, if you can’t handle a barking dog DON’T GET A DOG.
