Is there any way to teach a dog how to stop barking?

He hasn’t been responding to “quiet”, we have been saying that to him everytime he barks and we have even held his mouth shut and told him to “be quiet!” but he doesn’t seem to understand. Any suggestions?

a no bark collar. you need to get the right kind for your type of dog though; when used improperly, they can be a type of abuse! my suggestion, take your dog with you to a local pet store (places like petsmart welcome leashed pets) and ask for assistance there. they will show you the different brands and what type is best for your breed. they also have a spray called “bark away” im sure you can find in a petstore, that when your dog barks unnecessarily, you spray it, and basically tells them thats a no-no.
my parents have a no bark collar for their dobie, and now when she starts to bark, all they have to do it show her the collar and she stops immediately.
Put a female dog in heat in the pen next to him.
When my dog starts barking, and she doesn’t listen to when we tell her to be quiet, we pick up a newspaper and wave it at her, and she stops.
Start with a muzzle. Eventully he will learn if he barks, the muzzle will be put on. Even if you just show it him. He will stop.
everytime they bark when you dont want them to squirt them with water eventually they will stop when you dont want them to
they have dog collars that spray stuff in their face when they bark..which is a good tactic for when they are in their cage and bark..i also was told by a neighbor that there are these devices that you set up in your house or within a certain distance of the dog, and the dog wears a collar and when the dog barks it sets off a loud high pitch sound that only the dog can hear and is supposed to help control the barking..or i would try finding a trainer in the area that might have some ideas…good luck
You could get him a bark collar.
Get a bark collar. Anytime he barks it sends a quick small shock through his body, like a small correction. You can alter the intensities, depending on the size of dog you have. They don’t hurt the dog unless the intensity is too strong, so start out with the lowest and move up until it grabs his attention. Good luck!
no! you can’t stop them. it’s their way of communicating, they will just stop if they were satisfied to what are they asking from you or they get the thing what they meant for. if they just can speak maybe they will not bark. good dog training will lessen maybe or they will understand easily what you mean (i.e. “quiet” word.). if they will not bark what’s the use of having a dog.
I’m not sure of the BEST answer. However, I can tell you what worked with my little yappy chihuahua.
When he work bark uncontrollably, such as when we would have company , I would simply put him into his crate in a quiet place in a separate room and ignore him until he was calm and quiet. I did this in when guests would come over because I felt it was OK to allow him to alert me to things out of the ordinary. Such as strangers who came to the door.
I would only suggest this with an already crate trained dog. You don’t want the dog to feel as if you are punishing him by putting him in the crate. If crate trained the dog should feel the most secure in his crate. It should be his den.
Other times when he would bark, for no apparent reason. I would spray him with a water gun, say “quiet” and as soon as he was quiet say “good boy” and give him a treat. This would also work with clicker training.
Now if he barks while you are out walking or in a public place while on a leash, You could gently “pop” the leash to get his attention.. Tell him quiet and as soon as he is quiet and calm reward him .
I would slowly wean him off rewards and onto praise. I would make my “praise” calm with an easily excited dog because getting them wound up is just going to defeat the purpose, I’d think.
Again, I am not sure if this is the best answer. This is simply what worked for me and my dog. I would suggest you contact a trainer or behavior specialist in your area for help.
The most important thing I can tell you is to keep it “positive”. You dog WANTS to please you. It’s just a matter of you communicating to him HOW to please you.
Not spending enuf time with him/her. give a hug or something, go fo a wlk show that you here him and your there for him dont just see him whenever you feed him or bath time , let him know you are there from him
Your dog is barking for a reason. He’s likely alerting you to something that is making him uncomfortable. It could be a sound or a smell or something that he detects and you do not. It could also be something that he thinks is awry but you do not.
When he barks, acknowledge that you have heard his alarm and praise him for it. Say something like, ‘ok Max, I hear it, it’s ok’ and use body language (yawn, sit or lie down, etc.) to emphasize that it really is ok.
Don’t shout, don’t talk loudly, just stay very calm and look bored. If he’s barking out the window, you might even walk over and take a look at what he sees. Acknowledge the alarm, tell him that it’s ok and be totally calm about the whole thing.
I know it sounds rather absurd but you are teaching him that he doesn’t need to bark at, for example, a car pulling out or someone jogging down the street. His instinct is to bark an alarm at everything so he needs to be taught what he needs to bark at and what he can ignore.
Whenever he barks at something that he shouldn’t, he learns about another thing that he can ignore in the future. He doesn’t come with the knowledge that it’s ok to bark at a burglar but not to bark at the postman. To him, both people are walking directly towards his home and he will bark an alarm.
He needs to be taught specifically (just like you teach him to chew his toys and not your shoes) and he certainly can be. If, OTOH, you need him to stop barking incessantly while you are gone then you might try the citronella bark collar (with or without the citronella actually in it). With those, however, if the collar is not on or you don’t have it to show him, your dog may simply begin barking again.
