she gives very few and very faint clues to let me know she has to go, and sometimes she just goes! my dad says a housetrained dog should know to hold it until i say: get back from school. of course that only applies for short and logical periods of times. she can’t hold it forever! but i need some pointers on how to get Pheobe (shes a weenie dog!) to let me know when shes got to use it! i was thinking maybe a bark or a paw at the door, but i’m not really sure how to teacher that. she is really smart pup, and she is willing to learn, but i guess her owner needs more training first!!! lol!

    Hi,

The keys to good housetraining include:

Using a crate to prevent accidents and make it more likely that your pup will eliminate when you take her outside; and
Rewarding your puppy handsomely whenever she does the right thing in the right place. Punishing your pup for mistakes can actually make housetraining harder.

First put bells on string on the door you take her outside. Second take her out every hour/half hour so she doesn’t go in your house. And every time YOU take her out make her ring the bells so she knows what it means. I had to do that with my puppy and he still needs the bells so we know he has to go.

I bell trained my dogs, and it saves door from scratches, and makes it easy to know when your dog needs to go out. Another alternative is to teach your dog to eliminate on command, which is helpful when you are going to have to take the dog in the car or to the vet, or even visiting someone else. Information on eliminate on command can be found here

You could put bells on the door handle. Whenever you take her out, Hold her paw and ring the bell on your way out. She’ll start to associate ringing the bell with going to the bathroom. After a few weeks, she’ll start to do it herself. My sister did this with her dog and it works wonders.

For me, the main level of my house where we spend the most time is on the 2nd floor. So whenever I take my dog out, I always go through the first floor. Now my dog, just either waits by the stairs or walks down the stairs. Even when he didn’t need to use the bathroom and just walked dow the stairs, I would let him out, so he knows that if he goes down the stairs, he would be let out. It works well for me and my wife.
