A lot of dog handlers do not know what to do when their dog barks and is a nuisance for their neighborhood. When the reasons of the dog barking are known, it is much easier to correct the bad behavior. A dog handler who wants to keep problems at bay with his neighbors has many possibilities available from positive training tricks to the use of mechanical gadgets.

Why does a dog bark? A dog barks to communicate a message, show excitement or draw attention. The sound can’t be taken as a rich information message similar to human speech because it is not a language. There are distinctions in the tonality of a bark that can be recognized: disturbance barks are rough and low frequency while play barks are of a more tonal and higher frequency. A bark combined to a particular body posture may send a proper message to the dog’s owner about what is going on.

The main types of barks are warning barks and alarm barks. A warning bark is a response to a territorial intrusion and starts as a low growl becoming more loud and ferocious. If the dog feels in danger, it may as well show its teeth. An alarm bark is a reaction to an unusual event and voiced by one or two barks, which are in no way aggressive. The dog may keep on barking until action has been taken by the handler.

The other kind of barks are playful barks, need barks and on command barks. A dog barks for a treat or during a play session with its owner. It barks in order to have the owner satisfy its need such as providing food when it is hungry or letting it going outside to do its business. Some owners also teach their dogs to bark on command, which is part of a dog obedience training course.

When barking is a nuisance, the behavior can be controlled in different ways, with the easiest solution being the first, and the last the most controversial:

- Finding the reason of the barking and if possible eliminating it.
- Correcting the behavior with positive training methods.
- Attending a dog training course.
- Using a bark collar.
- Surgical debarking.

If a dog barks at another family pet such as a parrot, the solution would be to isolate the cage in another location. Positive training is a method to fix the behavior without punishing. Time needs to be spent with the dog in order to stimulate the animal to remain quiet, and give treats or praise when the barking stops. Dog training classes are also a wonderful way to go, but they need commitment and training centers are not always conveniently located close to one’s home.

There are a few types of very effective bark collars, which are more or less well received by dog lovers. Basically the device produces a response to a bark that annoys the dog and makes the animal stop. A citrus spray collar sprays citronella, that dogs do not like, to disrupt the pattern of barking. A vibrating ultrasonic collar produces a tone that humans can’t hear but irritates the dog and progressively discourage barking. An electrical collar generates a gentle irritation or buzz impression after a bark. The last option is the most debatable mechanical gadget of all for evident reasons.

Surgical debarking is a procedure to modify the dog’s voice box so that a bark makes a reduced noise. This is the last option available for a stubborn dog that won’t stop to bark despite all the efforts made by its owner. It is very controversial and also illegal in certain countries.

Dog Barking Behavior – 3 Top Tips To Stop Dog Barking

Posted: November 1st, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Articles | Tags: , , , | 1 Comment »

Barking is part of what dogs do.  They must enjoy it.  At least many dogs look like they have fun making noise.  But dog barking behavior is a challenge to your sanity when it just goes on and on without end.  It may be fun to your dog, but it’s not to you.  That uncontrolled noise must be stopped.

Consider these three tips for changing your pet’s behavior.

1.  Look for a cause.

Dog barking control starts best with a good understanding of why your dog barks so much.  At least you need a guess.  Please take the time to closely observe when the barking happens and where you are and where the dog is.  Maybe you need some input from neighbors or friends too.  It could be most of the racket is when you aren’t home.

Boredom, isolation, lack of exercise are all common causes of too much noise.  Just with minor changes of routine you may be able to help your dog and stop some of the commotion.

2.  What about you?

Have you trained your dog to bark?  Not on purpose I know.  If your dog starts barking, do you go outside and holler?  That may be a little interaction that your dog craves.  Is it “bark” and you open the door?  Are you rewarding the dog bark behavior at least in the mind of your dog?  Try to see your own behavior as your dog would.  Hard isn’t it?  Actually maybe some of us are better at thinking like dogs than others!

3.  What about a tool?

An anti bark collar might help too.  These collars are just tools.  Don’t skip the hard part of trying to understand the barking and go right to the tool.  Actually some dogs become more neurotic and more prone to crazy barking from using barking collars.  Especially a dog that suffers from isolation may act even nuttier when dog barking collars are used.  Be careful when choosing a collar, but sometimes they can help with training.

Dog barking behavior can be improved with work.  Remember the importance of observation and with patience you can regain some peace and quiet in your life.  Plus your dog will be happier and more contented too.

Aggressive Dog Behavior, a Nightmare No More

Posted: September 17th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Canine Care | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Aggressive dog behavior is one of a dog owner’s worst nightmares. The last thing you want to see in your beloved dog is aggressive dog behavior.

The natural reaction to dealing with aggressive dog behavior is outrage and even panic. So many dog owners yell at their aggressive dogs or hit their dogs to try and get control of canine aggression.

With aggressive dogs, it’s easy to mistakes that can lead to big problems. Here are four mistakes you want to avoid you’re dealing with an aggressive dog:

1. One of the worse mistakes you can make with an aggressive dog is keeping the dog penned up. Not exercising an aggressive dog is not a good idea!

A bored dog is far more likely to be an aggressive dog. Most dogs have a lot of pent-up energy. Dogs are simply designed to be active. When you don’t allow your dog to be as active as he or she wants to be, this can lead to problems.

The best way to avoid dog aggression is to work off all that pent-up canine energy. Be sure you take your dog on daily, long walks. Play with your dog frequently. The more you interact with an aggressive dog in a playful, fun way, the less aggression you’ll see.

2. Another big aggressive dog behavior mistake is hitting the dog. Training an aggressive dog requires touch, but not hitting! You never want to hit any dog, but least of all not an aggressive dog. Violence encourages aggressive behavior.

To correct an aggressive canine, pull at the scruff of the neck or gently nudge the dog. Using a firm voice and a specific gesture that telegraphs your displeasure will work too. Your goal in correcting an aggressive dog is to surprise and get across your message. You’re not trying to hurt or punish the dog.

3. Being a wimp is a big aggressive dog care mistake. Dealing with an aggressive dog requires you to be the boss. Dogs need guidance. They need a leader. Dog care doesn’t simply mean nurturing. It means leadership too.

To establish leadership with an aggressive dog, be sure you’re the one in control. Enter a room first unless you give your dog the okay to go ahead of you. Establish that you’re head honcho.

4. Dealing with repeated dog biting yourself is a big mistake when dealing with an aggressive dog. If you have a canine kid who bites, you need aggressive dog training from a professional dog trainer. Don’t try and deal with a biting dog yourself. The consequences are too dire. If the above tips don’t help control aggressive dog behavior, get some help.

Your dog deserves to be well-socialized so he or she can have a happy life. Take steps immediately to deal with aggressive dog behavior.
