Are there any good online Animal training courses?

I want to eventually have a career as a dog trainer for the police, guide dogs, and rescue dogs. However, there aren’t any requirements for that right now so are there any good courses, possibly that I could take online?

They both come running with one silent and one barking her fool head off. Also when someone walks by on the street she barks, barks, barks. What can I do?

What dog breed sheds little, is small/mid sized, easily trainable and good for a college student in an apt?

My course load and financial situation has me in the perfect opportunity to get and train a dog that i can have for years to come, i worry about entering the workforce in a few years and not having the time to dedicate to training, but now i have all the time in the world and would love to take advantage of the opportunity if i can figure out what breed i should be looking for. I live right beside a park for easy exercise with the pup outside the apartment too.

Is this a good idea? (regarding my dog) Group Classes?

Our Terrier mix is taking Canine Good Citizen classes in prep for the test (for free) down at the humane society. And we love it and its great because she already is so far ahead of the class (this is more of a refresher for her she has already had basic obedience classes). There is no doubt in my mind that she will pass the test.

Here is where I am concerned. My husband wants to stick our poodle in the next 8 week course. He says because its a free class if it doesn’t work out we can pull him out. Our poodle is kind of yappy when it comes to being around other dogs until he has time to get used to the specific dogs and I’m not sure a group class would be good for him. But my husband feels it would be great for him. (Not so much for Certification but for the other benefits of class)

And part of me feels he may be right. But part of me feels I’m scared to death of him causing a scene in a group class. He does have some slight dog reactivity issues we are working on (and these started after he got attacked at the dog park)

So I’m a little nervous about it. My husband said if I didn’t want to do it he would take him himself. But I feel I need to be there.

I was hoping to work with the behaviorist one on one for awhile first, but my husband feels since its a group class after a few minutes our poodle will be just fine and dandy and maybe he will. He has a lot of dog friends its just that inial meeting.

What do you think? Would it hurt anything? He is technically my husbands dog so I don’t think there is much talking him out of it.
ADD: I will add that there are quite a few dogs there with a lot more issues than our little poodle so it might be okay, but I don’t know what to decide on this.

Just need some guidence
He is a very good dog for the most part, very smart and eager to learn, he knows so many commands. He just always has a bad first reaction to new dogs…….but he does get passed it.

Would it be good for him he would be exposed to so many different kinds of dogs?
The behaviorist said it might even be a good idea, but I’m the only one having doubts I guess.

(The behaviorist we are going to be working with does these classes as well)
(We don’t expect him to pass the test, we don’t even plan on him taking the test at this point…….OUr terrier is in the class for the test, this would be to help our poodle with his dog issues

What makes a dog a good candidate for agility?

Posted: February 22nd, 2011 | Author: admin | Filed under: Common Questions | Tags: , , , | 10 Comments »

I’m interested in starting my dog in agility training b/c I’ve noticed how fast he picks things up and I want to bond with him more. I wouldn’t put him in competitions or anything, just a backyard thing. I just don’t want to buy the stuff and it turns out its not his thing. What characteristic do most agility dogs have that make them good at what they do?

What is a good small dog breed for a home with cats (and possibly children someday)?

I am looking to bring a puppy into our family. We live in an apartment and have cats (all laid back and used to dogs) and while we will not have children in the immediate future, we definitely will ten years from now. We are looking for a small breed dog that characteristically is not aggressive. We plan to take the puppy to puppy classes and obedience, so I know that with work any small dog has potential. We just want to minimize the risk by choosing a breed that is predisposed to get along with other animals and children.

We would really like a chihuahua, but we’ve researched and read that they aren’t good with kids. However, we of course would raise our future children to be gentle and respectful with animals, so I was wondering if that would make a difference. I absolutely do not want a “teacup” animal, so if we were to choose a chihuahua it would be a larger sized one. I was just wondering if anyone here would have any feedback.
