I got my adult dog from an animal shelter and the first week she was here she went to the bathroom outside ALL the time. Now we take her out all the time, first thing when I get up in the morning and since I don’t work and I smoke only outside, I take her outside with me alot and walk around. My children also love to walk her. Now she REFUSES to go potty outside and only wants to do it inside. She is fine, been to the vet and no problems. She just doesn’t want to go outside. She doesn’t do it right there in front of me but ALWAYS in the same room. Usually as far away from me as possible.
Just a note, this dog goes outside for about 15 minutes at a time (apartment) about 10 times a day. There are times where she is out with me and the kids for sometimes up to an hour without any sign of wanting to potty. This is frustrating because I cannot praise her for going outside because she refuses to go out there and will go within minutes of coming in or wait until alot later! Also she does not potty in the house when we are NOT home. No she is not crated and I refuse to crate a dog. Please give no advice on crating them, it goes agains my beliefs.
This is sad. I ask not to offer crates and what do I get? Someone who decides that it is their job to bash me because I don’t believe in crating dogs. I don’t care if you are a dog breeder or not. Dog breeders are typically started by someone who doesn’t know what spade and nueter mean.

We just adopted a 10 month old golden retriever/aussie shepherd (I think) mix. She is awfully sweet, but very shy and submissive. She has come a long way in two days, beginning to learn commands, feeling more comfortable, learning to walk on a leash. She is being socialized to as many things as I can find to show her. But…
She hasn’t pooped inside at all, but only poops in my garden when nobody is around. I’d like her to be doing this somewhere else, and her need for privacy makes it difficult to shower her with praise to reinforce her habit to go outside.
More problematic is going pee. She has done it inside several times. She doesn’t go in the same place, she’ll go on wood, tile, & carpet. She’s peed outside, only in private. I’m, again, unable to reinforce this good behavior. After eating/drinking tonight, I took her out on a leash in the back, she won’t go. 6 walks, she never goes when on leash. Off leash, she’ll just lay until she can go in and pee. outta space..
We have ordered a crate to try crate training, but in the meantime, we put her in the laundry room at night. After eating and drinking tonight, we stayed in the back for 30 minutes, and walked for 30 more. She would not use at all. I put her in the laundry room for 10 minutes, and she went on the floor.
Last night, we put her in there as a place to sleep, and she didn’t go in there. We let her out first thing this morning, and she barked for 15 minutes. The minute she came in, she peed on the floor.
Tonight, she won’t go in the laundry room. She sees it as punishment. I know if I leave her out, she’ll make pit stops on my rugs and carpet. I’ve tried hard to not raise my voice or scare her for going inside, but that room scares her. She has terrible separation anxiety and will bark very loudly if we leave her out or in the room (until she falls asleep.)
I’ve got a bell on the door, and ring it each time I open the door, but she has never indicated she wants to go out.
PS – going on the garden is not a big concern. I’ve dug a poop pit next to my composters. In the spring, there’ll be a fence around it, but in the meantime, poop away!

I have two Minuature Pinchers both adults (I assume theyre adults because one is pregnant by teh other and I dont think puppiea can get pregnant nor impregnate eachother lol). I was wondering how long would it take to get them from doing their busibness in teh house? my current thing is keeping them in crates only letting them out three times a day (during breakfast lunch and dinner to be exact) to go on walks and use teh bathroom. But now Im thinking ok that only teaches them not to do it in the crate that isnt gonna stop them from doing it in the house if theyre let out to run around it. So what are some working methods and how long do they take?
Also how long does it take a dog to get used to others? the female (whos pregnant) warme dup to us in about days and she jumps all over us and is playful however with people she doesnt know she growls, bark and chases strangers (is that her normal behavior or is she just that way because shes pregnant and feels she needs to protect her babiies?) ewhich I dont mind her being that way with stranger at all, in fact I prdefer it lol. However the male, hes scared of everyone he just stays in the corner of the crate, hardly eats, wont eat out of our hands (he’ll only eat the fodo if we put it down in fornt of him AND leave the room) he avoids eye contact, and runs away from us (we think he was abused or something) even when we open his cage he wont come out we hav eyto liteally take him out and even then he put his legs on each side of teh crate to try to hold himself in and prevent us from taking him out. though he doesnt bark, growl or bite and when we do get him out instead of running aroudn teh house and exploring like the female does he’ll just run into the nearest corner and stay there (or hide under somethingt like a bed or pool table). Youd think him seeing the mother of his children play with us and what not would indicate to him that we were safe for him to be aound, but apparently dogs dont think like humans lol. Will he ever warm up to us? if so how long would it take? Also will he still be the same way he is now around peopel he doesnt know (i.e being afraid of practically all humans) or will he actully warm up enough to be feisty and protective and bark/growl at strangers like his female counterpart does?
