What is the best way to train a puppy? Is it really worth going to obedience class?

She is a 4 month old puppy that we adopted 2 days ago and is very very well behaved and sweet.
I think she is blue heeler/dutch shepherd mix. We have a cat who intimidates the hell out of her.
We live in an apartment (amongst many dog owning neighbors) and we live a very active lifestyle. (i.e. jogging every morning, hiking/camping, etc.) .. So we plan to keep her well exercised every day no problem.
As per the advice of our neighbors, who decided to take classes, we were considering going to a dog training class but they are kind of expensive and we are not rich and wondering if it is possible to raise a good dog with a vigilant discipline routine and of course love.
Any recommendations as to specific training practices or books, etc? How much discipline do you feel is enough? How much is too much? What is your experience? Any advise..
Thanks!

am i the only person who is against obedience training?

Of course, when i get a dog i am all for house training and a simple NO command but i find all other tricks such as shake hands, high paw, beg and even walk at heel on a leash, if find it all very un-natural for a dog! i mean, its not wired in the dogs gene pool to do all these things for a humans amusement!! I mean i just think making a dog do thing that are un-natural to him or teaching him to do something he would never do in the wild is like teaching a human how to eat 10 kj of worms each day, possible but no one would LIKE to do it and same case with the dog.
what do you think… besides of the basic house training and no, what do you think of ‘tricks’
i find it a little mean..
I mean my dog only knows how to pee outside and she understands my tone of NO.. She acts like a DOG not some human created robot, which is how i think it should be…
It is in a dogs nature to bury bones, chase cats, bark at strangers, defend their territory, jump, play bite etc… taking this away to me feels like taking your dogs identity away!!

Are obedience classes worth it?

Posted: March 10th, 2011 | Author: admin | Filed under: Common Questions | Tags: , , | 11 Comments »

A trainer in my area offers 3 training courses. 1 where I am with my dog in a class once a week-$125. 1 is where I leave my dog to spend 4 days a week in his “training center”-$6-700, and another is where I leave my dog with him for a month and he teaches him everything $1500.

I love my dogs so much, but I’m having problems between 4 dogs with aggression.. housebreaking.. and sometimes leash walking.
I know for sure that my mini dachshund will be a full month of work, his attention span is shorter than a goldfish. His anger towards strangers is also miserable.

My basset/beagle is a perfect dog, it all equals out in the end (I guess).
