We already have a two year old sheltie who is potty trained and we are adding a second sheltie in a couple of weeks and I want to train them both to do their “business” in a certain part of the yard only. Does anyone have any experience with the Potty Rock or any of the potty training sprays that are out there?
Thanks in advance.

Here’s how I am teaching my pup to go potty:
1. Due to a number of reasons, I am trying to teach my pup how to go to the bathroom on a puppy pad, instead of taking him outside. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to take him outside, but he doesn’t have all of his round of shots completed yet; plus, I would like for him to learn where to go to the bathroom inside the house so if he ever needs to go when I’m not home, he can do so. This of course is in regard to when he becomes older and no longer requires a crate when I leave.
2. Crate training the pup. I believe this is helping due to him not eliminating in his crate as much as he use to. I get up in the middle of the night to make sure he doesn’t have to go. I also put the crate next to me on my night stand so if he starts to whimper to go potty, I can hear him and wake up. This is working quite effectively fore I no longer have to set an alarm, and he now gets plenty of rest.
3. I keep his puppy pad in one specific place throughout the house–so he doesn’t get confused of course.
4. I reward the pup with a treat every time he goes on his puppy pad. I can tell he’s starting to get the idea of receiving a treat after he goes potty, but the problem is this: I usually have to take him to the puppy pad whenever I can tell he has to go–he never goes there on his own. He would freely poop and pee wherever he liked if I didn’t stop and take him.
5. If he some how manages to go on the carpet before I can snatch him in time, I reprimand him by yelling “no,” and then swatting him on the nose–not hard of course to where I could hurt him, but hard enough to where he knows I’m not playing around with him. I then immediately bring him to his puppy pad to show him where he’s suppose to go. Then, after a few minutes, I put him in timeout for 15 to 20 minutes. I obtained a small dog cage from a friend and use this as timeout. He’ll cry and howl like crazy when he’s in there–begging to get out. I would think that this method would teach him that he’s in trouble for his actions, but then again, I’m not to sure since I’m a first time puppy owner.
All-in-all, I have now had my pup for two weeks, and he is currently eight weeks of age. I am not really noticing any signs of improvement in regard to him going to his puppy pad on his own when he needs to go. Am I doing something wrong, or do these things take more time than I imagined?
Thank you for your feedback in advance.

Breeders:
Do you breed show lines or working lines? I’m asking because I’m interested in the Akita Inu. I already know how much money it costs – I preach it to people here all the time. I do plan on going to tons of AKC shows, and speaking with other educated, reputable Akita breeders and learning under one. I think I’ll be breeding working line Akita Inu, or, like a lot of the dogs on there, working and show lines. No, it’s not to get money. I just truly want to see this breed thrive.
Potty Training:
Puppy pads? Really? What’s the point in a puppy pad, when you’re training the puppy to go OUTSIDE not inside? I’m not trying to be sarcastic or rant at all – I am genuinely interested in the thoughts behind the puppy pad and the dog litter box thing. I’m honestly just curious.
Legit: What breed do you consider the best guard dog? Keep in mind things like intelligence, obedience, and of course the aggressiveness of the breed.

@Jazzy: The breeding question is for about 20-30 years into the future. My dogs are very much in control, thanks. If you’ll notice, most of those questions are from almost a year ago. I get advice from other people, yes. It’s because I have an open mind and like to take suggestions, not because I have any problems. Although, yeah, I’ll admit the smaller dog has caused us problems. We’ve found that it was poor breeding – NOT from me, mind you. Someone else gave him to us, and we found out later that he was from a BYB. I wasn’t even aware of the place. I wasn’t even THERE lol. Otherwise I’d have run the other way.
@Kate: Sweetie, I preach details to people. ONCE AGAIN, this is for at least 25 years in the future, when things with myself are calm, and when I don’t have any dogs with me, nor any other pets. I tell people the FACTS: That breeding is thousands of dollars, and you need registered dogs who have been tested/papered, study under a breeding mentor, etc. Believe me, I’ve spent time researching this crap. I’m not just going to jump up at the next Akita Inu puppy – I’m going to study under a mentor. My main focus is to become a trainer. The breeding thing is only a slight possibility that I want EXPERIENCED breeders to converse with me and help me decide if it’s something I actually want to do or not. I’m interested in it, I’m not currently breeding any dogs. All my dogs are neutered/spayed.
@Jazzy: It’s fine. I understand the misunderstanding. I’m sorry for not being more clear. I re-read my own question, and I realized that I definitely worded it wrong ha.
I love the Japanese breeds, but, yeah, the Akita is my favorite. My dog is roughly 50% Akita (that’s what first got me interested) and I’ve fallen in love with him. I do realize that a purebred will be different, hence why I want to go to shows and talk to breeders before I actually start studying under a mentor.

So it has almost been a year since we got our dog. First we tried to potty train her on the wee wee pad things, but of course that failed. So now we have been trying to train her to go outside. We got lazy and decide to just clean up the mess if she had one so she is used to having accidents. So I am wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions for getting her to go outside when she needs to, instead of just going on the carpet. Trust me I am opened to anything.
