Is a dog right for me?

Posted: February 9th, 2011 | Author: admin | Filed under: Common Questions | Tags: | 3 Comments »

My family had a dog when I was young, but I haven’t had one for years. But I really miss having one. I would like to take it for walks and play with one in the park. The problem is I really don’t know if my lifestyle is appropriate for one. I may work long hours and because I live alone I really won’t have anyone else to care for the dog while I’m gone. Of course I wouldn’t want them to make a mess, either by going to the bathroom or tearing up things, when I’m not home. But I would be willing to take the time for training, or obedience school if that would be needed. I also live in an apartment so the space is limited and I really don’t have a yard.

As much as I would love to have a dog, I want to make sure it’s fair to them as well. I know he/she would recieve a lot of love, but there is much more to consider. Any thoughts?
Yes, dog are allowed where I live and most of my traveling would be to visit family in other states where the dog would be welcome. I know if I had to leave for a day or two I could have a friend watch him/her. But most of the time I could just bring them with.
I also wanted to clarify, that although I work long hours I would give the dog plenty of attention when I came home. I just don’t know if that would be enough.

Like children, a well behaved and a well trained dog is a pleasure to be around. And also like children, a misbehaved, untrained dog can be a real pain in the neck. That’s why it is very important to start training while your pet is still a puppy. With the correct dog training supplies, training can be easy and fun for you and your lovable pooch.

If you want to train your dog for a specific job, for example herding or hunting, you will need the correct equipment. For a dog that is going to be used as a sniffer dog by the police, or one that will accompany a police officer when he’s on duty, a special harness is used. This type of dog will need agility training as well as behavioral training.

The equipment needed for this type of training will include a choke chain, an electric ‘bark’, and a special collar. If the animal is aggressive, you may also need to have a muzzle until he learns to respect you and obey your commands.

You too will need some form of protection while training your pet. A store that specializes in dog training supplies will be able to provide you with the necessary padding and gloves. It is important that the owner use the correct equipment during all training sessions.

Most of us however just want our pets to be well behaved and to learn how to obey basic commands. You can teach him yourself or you can join dog training classes where a qualified instructor will help. Either way you will need to have some specific items such as a leash, collar, toys and treats.

All training supplies have been tested and approved to ensure safety for the owner and pet alike. You can find many of these suppliers online. Do a thorough search before buying because you can pick up some real bargains. Happy training!

The Importance of Dog Collars

Dog collars have been around for more than millennia. It is a dog accessory that will probably exist up to the next millennium, imaginably with more to offer rather than just restraining your dog. Food has always been an obsession among humans for centuries. Well, dogs are no exceptions. Some of the best trainers always carry attractive treats to bring the dog into a positive state for training. Choosing the right dog training treat goes a long way in making your dog respond better to training sessions.

Size and Texture

Treats used for dog training should not be large or hard to chew. We want the dog to focus more on training and not on trying to finish eating the treat. So avoid chewy treats at it takes much longer to finish. Treats just about the size of a pea works well for training sessions. Softer treats like hot dogs, cooked meat or cheese would work well and are also cheaper. You could also buy exclusive dog training treats, which are available in the market for the purpose of training. Smaller treats also come in handy during agility training.

Smell and Color

Dogs have a heightened sense of smell. So choosing a treat that has a stronger aroma would entice your dog to respond better during training sessions. It is important to pay attention to the color of the treat as well. Your dog should be able to identify the treat when the treat is tossed in the air or when it falls on the floor. Choosing a light colored treat is better as most training floors are dark in color.

Variety

All of us love variety in our food, so do dogs. Though having a variety of treats for your dog would be great, it is recommended to use a single type of treat like a hot dog or cooked meat exclusive for training sessions. This way you dog looks forward to the dog training treat as it is not available to them at other times and more importantly your dog learns to associate the treat with performance.

Healthy

It is better to choose a treat that contains good protein and vitamin content it. This would serve both purposes of training your dog and giving him his vitamin supplements. Avoid using too many real liver treats, as it would lead to loose stools. There are many high fat treats in the market, so watch out for while you are purchasing them. It is best to feed less to your dog before training sessions as they work better.

Why do dogs behave the way they do? It is simply, because they are dogs. Dog Obedience Schools: 4 Tips for Choosing the Right Training School

Posted: September 17th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Articles | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

Narrowing down your choices of dog obedience schools can be challenging, especially if you are a new dog owner that doesn’t know what to look for in a dog training school.

Many new dog owners believe that dog obedience school is only suited for puppy obedience training and that their older dogs will not be accepted into the class. Although some schools focus on puppy training, most schools offer classes for dogs of all ages and all levels of training.

Remember that while dog obedience training is to help teach the basic commands, it can also be a great way to spend time with your dog and to help them bond with you. If you are having a specific problem with your pet, such as they are rolling in stinky stuff or running away every time you open the door, there are also classes that are specifically geared towards this type of obedience problems.

Once you decide that you are interested in attending dog obedience training with your pooch, it is best to take a few minutes to research exactly what to look for in an obedience school.

Types of Training:

Some dog owners might be looking for basic command training, while others will be looking for advanced training to use their dogs for agility challenges, fowl hunting and retrieving and even for training. As well, some schools will focus on a certain type of training, so it is important to consider whether their training matches your needs as a dog owner. It is also helpful to look for a dog training school that offers various levels of obedience training, in case you would like to continue on with your dog training to help remain consistent with your dog.

Methods of Training:

Before you rush into the nearest dog training school and sign up for classes, you should attend an orientation or another training class to get an idea of what type of training the instructor or instructors will be using. Remember that just as you might not agree with the method a fitness instructor uses for teaching a class, you also might not agree with the training methods an instructor uses for teaching a dog obedience class.

Instructor Experience:

One of the most important things to look for is the type of experience the instructor has working with dogs. Are they simply a dog lover that is really good with animals or have they actually received formal dog obedience training? Remember that not all states will require dog instructors to have formal training, so it is up to your discretion to determine whether the instructor is suited to teach classes.

References:

Because there are so many different schools to choose from, you really should select a school that offers references from satisfied customer. You may also want to verify these references by asking veterinarians or local dog owners that have completed dog obedience schools.
