He is 3 years old and weighs 70 pounds. I just adopted him from County Services and brought him home yesterday. He’s an incredible dog! Very friendly with people, children, and other dogs. He will even allow you to touch any place on his body and grab food from him while eating.
However even after they said they tested him with cats, he’s still chasing our 3 month old kitty and 11 year old cat around the house (I know he’s a herder, but do you think he’ll try to hurt them?). Also, he will “sit” on command about 10% of the time and never “stays”! He’s will “come” most of the time. He also keeps trying to get on my bed (he obviously USED to have an owner).
Of course I read a lot about his breed before I adopted him, however I didn’t think to look up how to train him. Now, I read all over the place that they are really stubborn and hard to train for your average pet owner. I am your average pet owner!! I am looking into taking him to some obedience classes along w/my daughter so we can both learn, however I wanted to see if there were any home remedies. He doesn’t care much for treats, so positive rewarding has been a challenge.
Thanks for your help!
I was able to break him of the bed thing… by using a spray bottle. It took three times before he realized that he was not going to get on the bed w/o getting a spray from the bottle. So 1 down!
He’s been sick so I am putting the training on hold until he gets his appetite back. He also doesn’t like the bathtub too much. He has gotten better in the car already and I’m really starting to see that he’s an incredibly fast learner!
